Explain the significance of convertible Husbandry

-Convertible husbandry also known as alternate husbandry was a system used within agriculture in the 1500’s through the 1800’s.
-It was a process in which a higher proportion of land supported increasing numbers of livestock in England.
-This process is thought to be one of the most prominent changes of the agricultural revolution.
- By using this process farmers eliminated the need for fallows in their grain and were able to control their pasture’s quality by sowing grass seeds.
-Alternate husbandry was also known to be the best way to keep high fertility on the pasture and to create a wonderful soil composition.
-A large part of the system used animal manure as fertilizer.
- This new fertilizer was used in great quantities and this eventually benefited the farmers crop yields.
-The introduction of this system helped solve problems of the midland by providing pastures and arable rotation, which produced more grain on a reduced area of land. It also allowed for more sheep and cattle to be kept.
