Trench warfare was used a lot during World War I. The soldiers fought in trenches that were 8-9 feet deep and protected them from gunfire. Both sides constructed elaborate and heavily armed trenches with soldiers on both sides protected from the other sides small arms fire and enclosed by barbed wire.

Trench warfare is when opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other.
