Willem Kolff is the inventor of the dialysis and heart-lung machine. He was born on February 14, 1911 in Leiden in the Netherlands, where he received his medical and doctoral degrees. As a young physician in the Netherlands before WWll, he developed an interest in the artificial kidney when he witnessed a young man's death due to kidney failure.
