Rural life in Texas Between 1846 and 1860 nearly all texans lived on farms and ranches. They used to grow crops and raise life stocks. Cotton and sugar cane was their cash crop, a crop produced for profit. Because of the rich soil, cotton and sugar grew in Texas. Especially in East Texas along the gulf coast.
