African Slaves in Sugar Plantations

- The African Slaves were working under bad conditions, harsh treatment, tropical heat, high rates of disease (high mortality), and poor nutrients

- Portuguese governments left the work under slave owners- the slave owners did not care about the slaves as long as they got the profit
- Replaced any sick slaves without any monetary loss; every sugar production was really brutal
