The Great Schism was the division in the medieval Roman Catholic Church, during which rival popes were established in Avignon and in Rome. Even though it worked for a while, the council of Constance had to end the great schism by choosing a new pope. But it wasn't until 1417 that Martin V officially ended the great schism.
