Introduction-
Indigenous peoples called the Taino made the first interaction with Europeans. They lived in small villages under authority of chiefs, grew different crops (manioc), and took an interest in glass, beads, and the metal tools the Spanish brought.
Christopher Columbus built the fort of Santo Domingo (capital of the Spanish Caribbean) in Hispaniola. They tried at first to build forts and trading posts for trade with European market but it soon was shown that the Caribbean region had no silks or spices for trade.
