What happened in Greece ?

2001: Greece drops it's currency, the drachma, to join the euro.

2004: Greece admits it lied to get into the euro. Then the government admits its deficit has not been below 3pc since 1999, as EU rules require.

2005: The after effects of hosting the Olympics takes its toll. Greece's new government attempts to make a better budget to try to end the country's debt and get back on track.

2006: The plan seems to be working. GDP is up to 4.1 PC.

2010: Greece has been dependent on rescue loans from other European countries and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
