Catholic reformation
The effort to reform the Catholic Church from within is called the catholic reformation, or the counter reformation. Through the late 1500s and 1600s catholic reformation leaders worked to strengthen the Catholic Church and to stop the spread of Protestantism in Europe. Many of the leaders of the catholic reformation came from Southern Europe, especially from Spain. Spain rulers, nobles, and clergy were used to defending the Catholic Church.
