Why is she feral?

Who is Genie?

Who is Genie?

Why is socialisation important?

Could Genie have fully recovered over time?

What can we learn from this?

--------------------

--------------------

How is she now?

Please ask yourselves:

--------------------

Genie is a girl and the victim of severe abuse, neglect and social isolation. Genie's father kept her locked alone in a room from the age of 20 months to 13 years, 7 months, almost always strapped to a child's toilet or bound in a crib. During this time she was never exposed to any significant amount of speech, and as a result she did not acquire language during childhood.

Genie's life prior to her discovery was one of utter deprivation. She spent most of her days tied naked to her potty chair only able to move her hands and feet. When she made noise, her father would beat her. Her father, mother, and older brother rarely spoke to her. The rare times her father did interact with her, it was to bark or growl. In other words. There was absolutely no acceptable socialisation.

As of 2008, ABC News reported that Genie was living in California, "in psychological confinement as a ward of the state—her sixth foster home. And again, she is speechless."

The question we should ask ourselves is:
"What happened between her discovery and 2008?"
