FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE #1
The first example is symbol.
Symbols are objects that represent a abstract concept.
Poe uses symbolism when using the shadow as many different symbols.
The first way he uses it is when in line 9-12 when he states, "And o'er his heart a shadow- fell as he found no spot of ground that looked like Eldorado". He uses the shadow to represent gloom or depression coming over Sir Walter Raleigh as his mission seemed to be unsuccessful.
The second way he uses the shadow as a symbol is in lines 15-18 when he says, "He met a pilgrim shadow- 'Shadow' said he, 'Where can it be- This land of Eldorado!'
The shadow is used as a symbol of a ghost or guide attempting to help him through his journey, almost like he found comfort in it.
The way he uses it as a symbol is when in lines 21-24 when he states, "Down the Valley of the Shadow, 'Ride boldly ride', the shade replied- 'If you seek for Eldorado!' He uses the shadow to represent the concept that Eldorado may not exist in the real world and he references the Bible to help connect the emotions from the Valley of Death example to Sir Walter Raleigh's journey.
