On Saturday, November 1, 1755, all Saints Day, dawned like any other in the capital of Portugal. At 10 in the morning, many of its 275,000 inhabitants were in church. At that time, felt the first quake, giving start to the disaster that would decimate the lives of 70,000 people, one of the worst earthquakes in history.

There were three tremors, which lasted about ten minutes in total. Although Lisbon was the city most damaged by the earthquake, it not only affected Portugal. Its effects were also felt in North Africa and in the Spanish Southwest, as well as in France, Switzerland and Northern Italy. The oscillation of the water level that was felt even in Finland suggests a magnitude of about 9 on the Richter scale.
