Sectionalism in the South
The Southerners preferred more of a slow, steady, agricultural way of life. Very different from the industrial bustle of the North.
One of the things that made the boundary between the North and the South razor sharp was cotton. The more cotton produced, the more slaves were needed. It meant business for the North, but also went against their morals.
