Sectionalism in the North
The Northerners favored high tariffs to protect their businesses from foreign competition. The South didn't like the raised prices, so tariffs became one of the many issues between the two.
The South reeeally didn't like the high tariffs, because cotton was their main crop, and higher taxes meant less demand.
