Antibiotics become resistant through random mutations and evolution through horizontal transfer.

Horizontal transfer is when when a plasmid in a bacteria is resistant to the antibiotic. It duplicates the plasmid and can give it to other bacteria. This causes more bacteria to be resistant.

Natural selection

Vertical transfer is when bacteria gets a helpful gene through random mutation, and if it helps the organism survive, then it is passed on to future generations.
