Characteristics

11. The domino effect was a serious issue. It stated that if 1 country turned to communism, then the countries around it would also turn to communism. The U.S. used this as a justification for American intervention.
12. The space race was a significant aspect of the Cold War. The U.S. and the Soviet Union “fought” for power in spaceflight capability. The Soviet Union sent the first satellite in space (the Sputnik). However, the US responded by placing the first man on the moon.
13. In Afghanistan, the communist party known as PDPA (People’s Democracy Party of Afghanistan) took power. This sparked civil war; the PDPA vs the Mujahideen. The Soviet Union sent military advisors to help out the PDPA while the U.S. was assisting the Mujahideen.
14. In 1948, both the US and the Soviet Union divided up the Korean peninsula into two regions along the 38th parallel (South for the US and North for the USSR). Both established governments (with full military support) that supported their respective ideologies, and then both left the newly formed nations/governments to their own devices.
15. At the outbreak of the Korean War, the US quickly made sure that the UN adopted a resolution asking all member states of the UN to assist in defending South Korea, which made sure that they did not lose.
