Lynching was a way to set an example and to intimidate African Americans. victims were usually mutilated or riddled with bullets before they were hung.
Violence in the South
Most African Americans were hung for being financial competition with a white person, or they had show too little respect to a white person. It was a way to put African Americans back in their place in the minds of a southern person.
