Are they hunted?
The annual dolphin hunt provides income for local residents, but has received international criticism for both the alleged cruelty of the dolphin killing and the high mercury levels of the dolphin meat.According to the Japanese Fisheries Research Agency,1,623 dolphins were caught in Wakayama Prefecture in 2007 for human consuption or resale to dolphinariums, and most of these were caught in Taiji. The dolphin drive hunt takes place every year from September to April.
Any special modifications for living in the sea?
All marine mammals have special traits to allow them to dive deep and stay underwater for a long time.At some point, all must return to the surface to breath.Whales and dolphins breath to single or paired blowholes on the dorsal (back) surface of their head.During diving, the heartbeat slows down. When diving, blood is directly away from tissues that can handle low oxygen levels and toward the heart and brain where oxygen is needed the most.
