Oswald Avery was a medical researcher who was one of the first molecular biologist. He is best know for his experiment that isolated DNA as the material of which genes and chromosomes are made of. He conducted his experiment to identify the molecule that transformed the rough strain of the bacteria into the smooth strain in 1944. He noticed in his experiment that when the rough strain cells were exposed to the smooth strain's DNA, they were changed to the smooth strain. Avery concluded that when the smooth strain died in Griffith's experiment, their DNA was released. After this the roughy strain incorporated some if the smooth strains DNA, and then was changed to a smooth strain. His experiment led many people to wonder whether protein or DNA was responsible for the transfer of genetics. This further questioning in the science community led to more experiments on DNA which led to the a DNA model.
