was a period of time when the arts flourished in the African American community
1921 - 1936
The Harlem Rennaissance
of Harlem. Many Harlem artists had left the South for a place where they were allowed to express themselves in any way they wanted.
The Fisk University protests
were encouraged by W.E.B. DuBois, a former student, when he visited the
to investigate the harsh policies of the university's president. DuBois attacked the president, watched by other alumni and students.
The Great Depression
caused losses of jobs for many Americans, and African Americans often
suffered more because jobs that they were usually expected to take wee snapped up by desperate whites.
The Scottsboro case
was a case in which nine African American youths were accused of raping two white
women after the youths got into a fight with some white men. There was no evidence at all that the women were raped but the youths were accused anyway.
