Gideon v. Wainwright

▶️ Gideon was charged with breaking into a Panama City, Florida pool hall and stealing money from the hall vending machines.
▶️ at trial he could not afford a lawyer and he requested that an attorney be appointed to represent him.
▶️the Florida Supreme Court told him that honey only provided attorneys to indigent defendants charged with crimes that might result in the death penalty.
▶️ he was sentenced to five years in prison and he filed a habeas corpus petition.
