Engel v. Vitale
A New York State law required public schools to open each day with the pledge of allegiance and a nondenominational prayer.
The law allowed students to absent themselves objectionable.
One of the child's parents sued on behalf of his child saying it violated the first amendment.
The ruling,on June 25 1962, was 8:1 in favor of the parents because what the school did was unconstitutional.
