The unconscious mind expresses repressed wishes of the id through dreams - if we did not dream our unconscious thoughts could build up and threaten our sanity.

The content of dreams is usually symbolic of the real repressed wishes because the truth would be too distressing. This occurs through the process of dream work.

REPRESENTATION: unconscious thought visual
SYMBOLISM: symbol replaces the main action/person/idea
SECONDARY ELABORATION: both combine to disguise latent content.

The client describes their thoughts, totally uncensored, no matter how trivial or strange. The therapist intervenes occasionally to draw attention to themes/ideas.

This fee talking will eventually lower ego defence mechanisms and begin to link back to repressed thoughts often from childhood and bring them into the conscious mind.
