1. Patient lies on bed in loose clothing
2. Receives anaesthetic and muscle relaxant before treatment
3. Electrode fitted to head over non dominant hemisphere (usually right) to prevent side effects such as memory loss
4. 70-130 volt current passed through brain for less than one second
5. Induces convulsion in patient for about one minute
6. One the patient comes around from the anaesthetic they remember nothing from the procedure
