Mary Douglas Nicol Leakey was born on Febuary 6, 1913. Mary Leakey was married to Louis Leakey in 1936. She had three children. Richard, Jonathan, and Philip. Her mother's name was Cecilia Frere and her father's name was Erskine Nicol. As a child, Mary traveled constantly with her parents. As a result of this, she had very little formal education. Mary died on December 9, 1996.
