Georges Cuvier was a French naturalist and zoologist. He made the first important discoveries involving fossils, and was a main contributor to paleontology and comparative anatomy. He used his knowledge of anatomy to piece together fossils of extinct animals.

To Darwin, this helped to prove that species do change over time.
