Theme: Human emotions

Describe:

Analyze:

Interpret:

The Scream, by Edvard Munch, 1985. Munch uses curved lines and invented shapes to express the distortion of one's face when they scream.

There are bright colors and curved lines as well as a bridge, people in the background on the bridge, an ocean, and an island.
There are complex shapes and a distressed person.

-My eye travels towards to the man screaming, and then farther down the bridge towards the small people in the background
-The colors that tie the painting together would most definitely be the yellow and black/brown colors that appear throughout the whole painting, either in one small line or a whole area
-The organic, distorted lines give the painting texture, almost like if you ran your fingers over the lines, it would be possible to feel the twists and turns

This painting is interesting because of its coloring and overall story. I have not been able to figure out what the man is screaming at, and why, if he is screaming in pain, are there so many bright and sunny colors? The atmosphere around the screaming man seems so unfitting and it is a mystery what the artist's purpose was in creating the man's serene and colorful surroundings.
