Letters by Feudalism members: Serf

We have no rights, us serfs. I spend all day working for my knight. I mostly farm for food, but I also provide free labour and service whenever demanded by the knight. Life isn't exactly fair for us. Why do we have to follow in our parents' footsteps. Why can't we get another chance.
I'm not even aloud to leave the Manor! I can barely do anything but work for my knight. I'm too poor to pay for my freedom and even if I could, where would I go? There's no one to protect me from enemies out there. That's probably one of the only few benefits of being a serf, protection. Another is getting our own square of land to farm for ourselves.
If the weather is wrong for farming, we're not shown any mercy. They just tell us to figure it out ourselves. I can't even get married without the lord's permission. I just wish I could escape this.

-The Serf
