The South’s fertile soil was put to use as farmland, and so many people owned farms or plantations that few people lived in urban cities. Common crops grown were cotton and indigo. These farmlands were so large and sprawling that slave labor was heavily relied on to carry out agricultural tasks.
The railroad system of the south was weaker than that of the North. Railroads did not take up as much of the land as it was mostly occupied by farms, and the trains that ran through the South were used more for transporting goods that for civilian transportation.
