WHY DID THEY FIGHT?
With the election of Abraham Lincoln, many southerners were outraged and feared he would end slavery. No compromise could settle this North/South tension. Many states seceded and declared themselves a separate country where slavery was legal and in no danger of being threatened. Confederate forces had already been arranging themselves, and the Civil War was ultimately inevitable at this point.
