Who were the serfs?

Serfs were people bound to a lord and had to work the land in exchange for protection and justice. Serfs farmed the land, cared for the farm animals, produced the goods required by the lord and other occupants of the manor.
These people served their lord for life, unless they spent a year and a day in a township. Once this time had passed, they would be free.
