-African American leaders start to search for new approaches to race issues
-The Niagara Movement: 400 members who vowed never to accept inferiority, bow to oppression, or apologize before insult.
-National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP): founded to abolish segregation and discrimination, to oppose racism, and to gain civil rights for African Americans. It had 50 branches by 1914 and 6,000 members.
