After Reconstruction

Discrimination

Voting Restrictions:
-Poll Tax: A special fee that must be paid before a person is allowed to vote. This was used to prevent African Americans from voting since most of them were unable to pay the tax.
-Literacy Tests: These tests were used to demonstrate that the voter could read and write. This was used to prevent African Americans from voting since most of them were uneducated.
-Grandfather Clauses: Since some whites were not educated, the grandfather clauses said that if any of their grandfathers had voted before, then so could they.
