The palisades and chevaux-de-fries were used as defensive structures. These anti-cavalry mechanisms were crucial to the strategy of both armies. In the background of this photo you can see the potter house. Confederate sharpshooters holed up in its rooms and took down many Northern fighters. Eventually the Southerners were driven out because of the extensive damage on the house, inflicted by Union cannons.
