History of the pencil: Part 2
Graphite became commonly used for pencils in 1564 when a large graphite deposit was found in England. It became popular for leaving a darker mark then lead. The graphite was so soft and brittle that it required a holder to prevent it from breaking. Pencils were originally wrapped in string before wood was used.
