History of the pencil

The idea for the pencil came from a tool of writing the Romans used, which was called a stylus. Instead of using graphite, it used a thin metal rod to leave a light but legible mark on paper. Other early forms of stylus used lead instead, but weren't as popular as using a metal rod.
