It wasn't until March 30, 1858 that Hymen Lipman received the first patent for a pencil with an eraser attached to the end. In 1862, he proceeded to sell his patent to Joseph Reckendorfer for $100,000, who then proceeded to try to use pencil manufacturer Faber-Castell for infringement. In 1875, the US Supreme Court ruled against Joseph declaring the patent invalid.
