Some Americans came to the zoo to inspect the animals. They were interested in buying some of the animals but there were some that they didn't bother looking at. "Most of our birds and reptiles, and out lemurs, rhinos, orang-tunas, mandrills, lion-tailed macaques, giraffes, anteaters, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, zebras, Himalayan and sloth bears, Indian elephants and Nilgiri tahrs, among others, were in demand, but others, Elfie for example, were met with silence" (Martel 110).

In this chapter Pi's family starts to close the zoo and sell some of the animals.
