common name: poison ivy
Latin name: Toxicodendron radicans
Poison ivy is a plant that is found in North America and Asia, it's well known for causing an itching, irritating, and sometimes painful rashes. These rashes are caused by urushiol, a clear liquid compound in the sap of the plant. Urushiol helps the plant retain water, it's not a defense mechanism. Poison ivy is eaten by many animals and the seeds eaten by birds. Poison Ivy is a three leaf plant, each leaf is collection on its own stem. It also appears shiny. It grows throughout much of North America, including the Canadian Maritime provinces, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and all U.S. states east of the Rocky Mountains, as well as in the mountainous areas of Mexico. Only around 20% of the human population doesn't have a allergic reaction to urushiol.
