Paraphrase of Our Poem

There is a stone wall which separates the properties of the speaker and their neighbor. In spring, they meet in order to make repairs to the wall and walk along the sides of it. The speaker sees no reason for the wall to stay up since there are no cows to be maintained, only trees. The neighbor then says "Good fences make good neighbors." The speaker doesn't agree with this and thinks of his neighbor as old-fashioned for wanting to keep the wall up. After trying to convince the neighbor that wall has no purpose, the neighbor just repeats his saying once more; declaring his dedication to keeping the wall up and emphasizing values most likely passed down in his family.
