Ancient Rome
In Ancient Rome, chariot races were held in an oval shaped arena. It was the most popular sport in Rome, all social classes attended chariot races. Ceremonies begun with a procession headed by the sponsor of the games, followed by the charioteers. A single race could include up to 12 competitor, and a full race was called a missus (7 laps around the oval).
