Education

Ever since President Lamar had set aside land for public education during the Republic of Texas, little progress has been made. There was no public system of education when Texas became a state. Many Anglo American children attended private schools that were established by their communities or churches. But finally in 1854, Governor Elisha M. Pease signed a law to save $2 million for school funds. The fund was lacking, but soon schools and colleges were being established.
