Mexican Texans: about 23,000 Tejanos lived in Texas, most lived close to San Antonio and near the Gulf of Mexico, most worked as ranch laborors, sheepherders, or cowhands. They came to Texas in the 1850s looking for good farm land. One of the leaders of these Tejanos who fought the Anglos, was Juan Cortina.
