Mexican Texans
WHO: Mexican Texans, José Antonio Navarro, Juan Cortina,
WHERE: In/near San Antonio; between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande, or along the Rio Grande from west of Big Bend to El Paso (Cortina also lived near Brownsville)
WHEN: Historians estimate that during the census of 1850, even though the Mexican Texans were counted, there were about 23,000 Tejanos and there were up to 400 supporters of Cortina's during the Cortina War (which took place in around 1859 to about 1861 when he was defeated)
WHY: Many Tejanos (Mexican Texans) were actually already living in Texas during the Mexican American War. Some actually helped fight with Texas during the Texan Revolution. The Tejanos were a large majority of Texas population, and had a large influence in Texas. (Part of the Reason the Cortina war started was because they were afraid they were losing influence. They also thought the Anglos were taking some of their rights
