The king was in complete control under the feudal system. He ruled by divine right and owned all land in the country. As a way to maintain control over his lands, he formed a contract with nobles and lords. He only allowed men he could trust to lease land from him. Before they were given land, they had to swear an oath to remain faithful to the king at all times.
