Maurya Empire

Asoka the Great:
Asoka was Chandraguptas grandson who believed in a different way of ruling. He rejected his grandfathers brutal methods and turned to Buddhism hoping to rule by moral example rather than violence. He sent missionaries to spread the word Buddhism. He reigned peaceful and prosperous. Upon his death, the empire declined.

⚫Chandragupta Maurya forged the first empire.
The Maurya Dynasty first gained power in the Ganges river valley. Later, they conquered most of northern India then to the Deccan Plateau.
⚫The capital of the empire was Pataliputra. It boasted schools and a library as well as spending palaces and temples.

Chandragupta:
He was the first ruler of the Maurya Empire. He collected taxes, built roads, and harbors that allowed trade to flourish. The government was bureaucracy. He had a secret police and they were very brutal. They reported on crime, corruption, and disloyalty. He feared assassination so he slept in different rooms and had people taste his foods.
