The Tesla coil was created to produce large amounts of electricity. Back in 1891 when Tesla first came out with this invention, it was used by him to conduct electric experiments. It was later used to produce wireless telegraphy through radios, and for doctors equipment (X-rays, transmitters, etc). This invention replaced artificial sources of energy, that tended to last only for short amounts of time and were more dangerous to function.

Modern day Tesla coils are used for television transmission, and as vacuum tubes. Many other things as well are powered by electrical sources inspired by Tesla's work. He was a man deeply passionate about electricity, and he really helped spark the interest in others as well. Our generation is heavily influenced by electricity as well, and Tesla was only one of the kick starters of this amazing concept.
