Women in the Middle East are forced to abide by a strict dress code. It varies in each country and religion. Usually women are expected to wear a thick, loose, and opaque cloak. This is derived from the desire for women to be modest and conservative. These cloaks vary in thickness and length to address certain levels of modesty. Some of these garments, listed from most conservative to least, include are the burka, the niqab, and the abaya. The scarf covering the head and hair is called the hijab. Females must comply to this code constantly and in all appropriate settings, such as public engagements with men.
