Although it seems that women's rights are suffering, many activists are coming together to support and fight for these women. In Saudi Arabia many women are protesting the ban on driving. They are driving around Saudi Arabia in vehicles to show their disapproval. A woman named Manal al-Sharif started this campaign in 2011. Another organization is called the Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation that is dedicated to advancing women's empowerment in Saudi Arabia. They do this by creating awareness and education projects and training women for future higher level employment.
Social media has played a huge role in the awareness of daily hardships women face in the Middle East. From blogs to Facebook pages, women have been recognized for their part in embracing women rights though media connections. In particular, Manal al-Sharif, mentioned above, has been an influential figure in the social media boom. She has over 275 thousand followers, all of them supporters of her cause. Al-Sharif tweets inspiring words as well those criticizing the unfair gender laws in Saudi Arabia. She has even appeared as a speaker on a TED talk. Despite attempted government censorship, she has continued to inspire women to fight for their rights around the world.
