After much anticipation, the first two Saudi Arabian female athletes participated in the 2012 London Olympics. Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, a judo competitor, and Sarah Attar, an 800k meters runner, were invited to compete by the International Olympics Committee. This was an attempt to end sexual discrimination in international athletics. Citizens hailed this empowering breakthrough by the Saudi government.
